The missing afternoons
A city library surveyed visitors about opening earlier on weekdays. Most respondents supported the idea, and the report initially described the survey as representing local demand. However, the questionnaire had been offered only to people entering the library before noon. A student volunteer pointed out that residents who worked mornings or visited after school had little chance to respond. The library kept the early-opening proposal under consideration but extended the survey to evening visitors and online users. The first responses were not discarded; instead, they were treated as information about one part of the community rather than the whole of it.
A different kind of speed
A software team was praised for answering customer messages within two minutes. To meet that target, staff often sent a quick acknowledgement and moved on before investigating the problem. The response-time figure improved, but customers increasingly reported having to contact the team again. The manager then separated two measures: time to first acknowledgement and time to a useful resolution. Staff continued to acknowledge messages promptly, but evaluation also considered whether a customer’s problem had actually been addressed. The aim was not to make the first reply slower; it was to prevent one convenient number from standing in for the whole service.
The useful failed design
A class built model bridges from paper. One group’s bridge collapsed during testing, although their early sketch had looked impressive. Instead of immediately replacing the whole design, they recorded where the paper first bent and compared that point with their predictions. They discovered that a decorative section had added weight without supporting the load. Their second version was simpler and held more weight. The teacher valued not merely the improved bridge but the group’s ability to connect a specific observation with a design change. A failure that produced no careful record, she noted, would have offered much less guidance.
A green roof proposal
A school considered installing a green roof. Supporters expected cooler classrooms and a place for environmental lessons. An engineer agreed that these were possible benefits but asked whether the building could safely support the added weight and how the roof would be maintained during holidays. Students revised their proposal to include a structural check, a small trial area, and a maintenance plan. The revision made the project less dramatic than covering the entire roof at once, but it also made the proposal easier to evaluate and potentially carry out.
